Guzzo's UnRested Screening Wednesday at Venue 2106
(released 12/14/2025)

UNRESTED: ECHOS FROM THE GRAVE is a four-part documentary series based on the investigative journalism of award-winning journalist Paul Guzzo. The series begins with 11 burial grounds in Tampa Bay that were flattened by developers, ignored by city officials, and nearly wiped from public record. The series uncovers how greed and racism, not oversight, led to the erasure of Black cemeteries across America.

UnRested reveals how systematic racial injustice shaped the very ground beneath our feet - from Tampa to Texas to Virginia. This is not forgotten history, rather it is deliberately buried - for profit.

How it started. In 2018, Ray Reed a retired head of Hillsborough County's indigent healthcare system, reached out to the Tampa Bay Times claiming he was regularly visited by indigent cemetery's ghosts who pestered him to bring them dignity in death. Reed then made a more explosive claim – he believed Black cemeteries throughout the area had been built over without the bodies being removed. That inspired a Times investigation that discovered Zion Cemetery and its nearly 1,000 graves under federal housing projects. And that article set off a flurry of investigations that discovered the next 10 cemeteries.

Each episode exposes a broader national pattern. In real time, uncomfortable clarity, this series uses telecast archives, raw interviews, and dynamic motion graphics. In the spirit of 30 for 30: June 17, 1994, UnRested doesn't tell you how to feel; it shows you the truth.

You can experience a preview of the documentary along with a Q&A on December 17, 2025 for free. This two-and-a-half-hour event will take place at Venue 2106 located at 2106 West Main Street, Tampa, Florida 33607. Reserve your free tickets on Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.com
